For eighteen months, the COVID-19 pandemic has given us little choice but to work at home and a variety of other places, whether it’s at an office, a co-working space, or informally meeting with others.

This constraint has challenged us to rethink how information flows through our organization and the way we coordinate with others to get work done — and for many, it hasn’t been easy. Hybrid work - working from home, the office, a mix of the two, and anywhere we can - has disrupted the centuries-long notion that a centralized office is at the core of how we get the best and the most work done.

But the silver lining is that hybrid work has encouraged us to take a good hard look at what constitutes successful work, assumptions about how to be productive, innovating at scale, hiring and retaining the best employees, leveraging digital tools, and more.

As a result of this pressure, we’ve all experimented, learned, and failed to some degree in the last year and a half. As we move into the last quarter of 2021, we’re entering the next phase of hybrid work. Our organizations are pivoting from “emergency work-from-home” to intentional strategies for hybrid work. In this phase, we’re integrating what we’ve learned during the previous awkward phase and leveraging it to succeed.
